Late Saturday night the Texas State Park Police along with a Delta County Sheriff Deputy had a female suspect escape the patrol unit, while still wearing handcuffs.

The female who has been identified from jail records as Taya Rene Smith made her escape late Saturday night after the State Park Police found a couple trespassing on the Doctors Creek Unit of Cooper Lake. The couple reportedly drove through the exit gate to access the park. When the State Park Police located the vehicle, which was occupied 2 times, the officer could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle. When the officer advised the occupants of the vehicle to step out, the female took off running. After a short foot pursuit the female was caught and placed into custody.

The Delta County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene to assist. Once units made scene they conducted their usual routine investigation. During the investigation the female suspect was able to make her way out of the patrol car window and sneak away from the scene, later obtaining a ride to the Commerce area.

Just after midnight the Delta County Sheriff’s Office released a BOLO (Be On The Look Out) for Taya Rene Smith.

Commerce Police Department received a tip as to a possible location of the female suspect. Commerce PD followed up on that tip capturing Smith who was still in handcuffs.
