On May 24 th , 2006 Cora McAbee and Brandon Howell were murdered while they slept inside her residence located in the 3500 block of Private Road 2174. It has been confirmed that Cora and Brandon were in a relationship and had been for several months leading up to the night of their murders. Over the past 13 years the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating this case and following up on leads as they have come in but nothing of evidentiary value was located and no one has come forward with information pertinent to the case. On May 7 th , 2019 at approximately 5:45 p.m. the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a disturbance involving shots fired in the 1200 block of Deer Lane in Quinlan Texas. Deputies were initially advised the caller stated that she had been assaulted by a family member and the 911 call was disconnected. A second 911 call came in from a second person who stated that one person had been shot. Initially, responding deputies were not clear on whether the suspect had shot himself or another family member. Multiple law enforcement officers arrived on scene and located several people at the location one of which had been shot. It was determined that the suspect was still on scene and was subsequently detained for investigative purposes.
Deputies immediately began life saving measures on the victim which included the use of an Automated External Defibrillator until American Medical Response made scene. Sadly, the efforts were unsuccessful and the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators with the Criminal Investigation Division arrived on scene and as a result of the investigation Clifton Crabtree, 24, from Quinlan Texas was taken into custody on one count of Murder and was transported to the Hunt County Detention Center. Justice of the Peace Wayne Money at arraignment issued a $1,000,000.00 Cash or Surety Bond.
Sheriff Randy Meeks stated “This was a horrible and violent crime and my thoughts and prayers are with the family. I want to commend all the officers and paramedics for all their efforts to try and save the victim”.
UPDATE: REWARD INCREASED.
On April 4th, 2019 Hunt County Crime Stoppers offered a reward of up to $1,500.00 for information leading to the arrest of person(s) responsible for the murder of Heather Pope on August 3rd, 2010.
In the following days Carla Pope, Heathers mother, reached out and inquired about increasing the reward amount if monies were donated to Hunt County Crime Stoppers. The process was explained and on April 26th, 2019 Carla and Randall Pope met with Sgt. Jeff Haines, law enforcement coordinator for Hunt County Crime Stoppers.
Randall and Carla Pope stated they raised a total of $8500.00 to add to the reward. This increases the reward up to $10,000.00 for information leading to the arrest of person(s) responsible for the murder of Heather Pope. This reward is effective immediately.
Breaking out of Hunt County, Matthew Pride has been taking into custody by law enforcement and booked into Hunt County Jail on a 1 million dollar bond for the murder of Nicole Kennedy Pride. This is all the information we have at this time, and will update when we learn more.
